Hair Shedding vs Hair Loss: What’s Really Going On Up There?

Let’s talk about something that literally ends up in your hairbrush, shower drain, or on your black jumper. Yep, we’re diving into the world of hair shedding vs. hair loss. As a stylist who’s been hands-deep in gorgeous heads of hair for years, I can tell you this topic comes up more than you’d think. So let’s bust the myths, ease your mind, and get to the root of it. (Pun fully intended!)

First Things First: Yes, It’s Normal to Shed Hair!

We all lose hair. Every day. In fact, the average person sheds 50 to 100 hairs a day. If you’ve just taken out a bun that’s been in for two days and now it looks like your hair is evacuating the building, don’t panic. That’s just shedding, and it’s completely natural. It’s part of the hair’s life cycle: grow, rest, shed, repeat.

Things like seasonal changes, stress, and even brushing more than usual can temporarily increase shedding. And if you’ve just had a baby, your hair might be shedding like mad around the 3-month mark. Again, totally normal. (And I’m always here to help post-baby mamas get their hair groove back.)

So When Isn’t It Normal?

Now here’s where things shift. Hair loss isn’t quite the same as regular shedding. If you’re noticing bald patches, thinning areas, or your ponytail getting scarily skinny, it might be time to dig a bit deeper.

Hair loss can be caused by all sorts of things. Hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, autoimmune conditions, or even tight hairstyles that put too much tension on your scalp. I’m looking at you, super-snatched high ponytail.

If you're seeing changes that don't feel right, don’t keep worrying in silence. I always say to trust your gut and talk to someone. A doctor, a dermatologist, and yes, your stylist (that's me!) can all help spot what’s going on.

Hair Extensions: A Helping Hand or a Hidden Hazard?

Hair extensions can be absolute magic. They add volume, length, and even a boost of confidence. I love creating a transformation with well-fitted, natural-looking extensions. But it’s important to know when they’re helpful and when they’re not.

When to say yes to extensions:

  • You want to add volume or length to healthy hair
  • Your hair is shedding normally, but you fancy a fuller look
  • You’re prepping for a special occasion and want that wow factor
  • You’re happy to maintain them properly and give your scalp breaks

When to hold off:

  • You’re experiencing active hair loss or thinning
  • Your scalp feels sensitive or irritated
  • Your hair is brittle, damaged, or breaking easily
  • You’re using extensions as a way to cover up a deeper problem rather than treat it

In these cases, it’s better to focus on restoring your natural hair health first, and I can absolutely help guide you through that. Sometimes a bit of TLC, the right cut, and a nourishing routine make all the difference. And when your hair’s ready, we can talk extensions again.

What You Can Do (And How I Can Help)

Whether it’s shedding or loss, there are things we can do. Scalp health, gentle styling, and the right products make a massive difference. I’m always happy to recommend a plan to get your hair feeling healthy, full, and fabulous again.

And the best part? As well as working in a salon, I also offer home visits. Whether you're juggling kids, working from home, or just love the idea of a salon experience without the commute, I’ll bring my scissors, tools, and good vibes right to your door.

So if you’ve got hair worries or you just fancy a fresh cut or colour in your kitchen (how luxe is that?), give me a shout. Let’s chat, get your hair glowing, and maybe have a cup of tea while we’re at it.
