Should You Sleep with Wet Hair
We all do it sometimes. It is late, you are tired, you have just washed your hair, and the thought of reaching for the hairdryer feels like climbing a mountain. So you crawl into bed with damp hair and hope for the best.

Hi my lovelies
We all do it sometimes. It is late, you are tired, you have just washed your hair, and the thought of reaching for the hairdryer feels like climbing a mountain. So you crawl into bed with damp hair and hope for the best.
But is it really that bad to sleep with wet hair? Let’s talk about it.
The Morning Surprise
If you have ever woken up looking like a cross between a scarecrow and a rock star, then you already know one downside of sleeping with wet hair. It dries in whatever wild shape your pillow decides. And trust me, I have seen some impressive morning hair in my time.
But beyond the comedy value, there are other things to think about.
What Happens When You Sleep with Wet Hair
- Wet hair is weaker than dry hair, which means it is more likely to break as you toss and turn in your sleep
- Damp hair can lead to tangling and matting
- Your pillow can hold onto the moisture, which creates a cosy little environment for bacteria. Not the glamorous kind of bedtime companion
- If you have a sensitive scalp, it can even leave you feeling a bit itchy or uncomfortable the next day
How to Make It Less Risky
I get it. Sometimes drying your hair before bed is just not going to happen. So if you are going to sleep with damp hair, here are a few tips to reduce the damage:
- Apply a leave in conditioner or serum to protect your strands
- Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction
- Braid your hair loosely before bed to prevent tangles
- Avoid going to bed with soaking wet hair. Give it a quick blast with the dryer so at least it is half dry
My Personal Take
Honestly, your hair will thank you if you avoid sleeping with it wet whenever possible. But life happens. The trick is not to make it a habit. Think of it like eating cake for breakfast. Lovely once in a while, but probably not the best idea every day.
For My Extension Queens
If you are wearing hair extensions in the Costa Del Sol, please be extra careful. Sleeping with wet extensions can cause knots and matting around the bonds or tapes, which can shorten the life of your lovely new hair. Always make sure your extensions are completely dry before you sleep.
So should you sleep with wet hair? The short answer is no, not if you can avoid it. But if you absolutely must, then treat your hair with a little extra love before bed.
