The Ultimate Guide to Hair Care Between Salon Visits

By Katie, Owner of Katie Snowden Hair in La Cala de Mijas

Welcome back to the Katie Snowden Hair blog! As a hair dresser with years of experience, one of the most common questions I get asked is, “How can I keep my hair looking great between salon visits?” Whether you're a regular at our hair salon in La Cala or just want to make your hairstyle last longer, good at-home hair care is essential for maintaining healthy, vibrant hair.

In today’s blog, I’ll share my ultimate guide to keeping your hair in tip-top condition between your salon visits. From the right products for your hair type to common mistakes to avoid, this guide will help you maintain your gorgeous locks and ensure you’re always looking and feeling your best.

1. Choose the Right Shampoo and Conditioner

Shampoo and conditioner are the foundation of your hair care routine. However, using the wrong products for your hair type can do more harm than good. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Fine or Thin Hair: Look for lightweight, volumizing shampoos and conditioners that won’t weigh your hair down. Avoid products with heavy oils or silicones.
  • Thick or Coarse Hair: Use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners that provide extra hydration. Look for products with nourishing ingredients like argan oil or shea butter.
  • Curly or Textured Hair: Curly hair loves moisture, so use sulphate-free, hydrating shampoos and conditioners that define curls and prevent frizz.
  • Colour-Treated Hair: If you’ve recently had a colour treatment, it’s essential to use colour-safe shampoos and conditioners to preserve your colour and keep it vibrant for longer.

At Katie Snowden Hair, we often recommend Olaplex to our clients who want to preserve the health of their hair, especially if it's been colour-treated or exposed to heat styling. Olaplex works by repairing and strengthening hair from the inside out, and it’s a must-have product in your routine if you're looking to maintain strong, healthy hair.

2. Use a Leave-In Conditioner or Treatment

Leave-in conditioners and treatments are an essential step in your hair care routine. These products provide added moisture, protection from heat, and help with detangling. If your hair is prone to dryness or damage, consider using an Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother, which strengthens and nourishes while providing a light hold.

For those with fine or thin hair, a lightweight leave-in treatment can help add moisture without weighing your hair down. If your hair is thick or coarse, a richer leave-in conditioner will provide the hydration needed to keep hair soft and manageable.

3. Limit Heat Styling

I know it’s tempting to reach for the straightener or curling iron every day, but too much heat can damage your hair over time. To keep your hair healthy between salon visits, try to limit heat styling to a few times a week.

When you do style with heat, always use a heat protectant! I can’t stress this enough. Heat protectant sprays or serums create a barrier between your hair and the heat, minimizing damage. I recommend a lightweight spray for fine hair and a richer serum for thicker, more coarse hair.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking for a quick style, try a blow dry with a round brush to create volume and shape without excessive heat damage.

4. Incorporate Regular Deep Conditioning

For those with colour-treated hair, over-washing can cause your color to fade more quickly. By washing less frequently, you’ll help maintain the vibrancy of your color for longer.once a week to give your hair that extra boost of hydration and repair. This is where Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector comes in. It works wonders by reconnecting broken bonds in your hair, leaving it stronger and healthier after each use.

For clients with dry or brittle hair, you can even leave a deep conditioning treatment on overnight for maximum moisture. Just make sure to cover your pillow with a towel to avoid any mess!

5. Avoid Over-Washing Your Hair

Washing your hair every day can strip it of its natural oils, leading to dryness and brittleness. For most hair types, washing every two to three days is more than enough to keep your hair clean and healthy. If your hair tends to get oily between washes, try using a dry shampoo to refresh your style without needing to wash it every day.

For those with colour-treated hair, over-washing can cause your colour to fade more quickly. By washing less frequently, you’ll help maintain the vibrancy of your colour for longer.

6. Don’t Skip the Scalp Care

If you’ve been using a lot of heat on your hair or have gone through a colour treatment, be sure to book a visit with your  and promote healthy hair growth. You can even use a gentle scalp scrub once a month to remove product build-upu and excess oils.

Also, if you’re experiencing any issues like dryness or itchiness, look for scalp treatments that can balance and hydrate the skin without irritating it. If you’re unsure of what’s best for your scalp, I’d be happy to chat with you during your next visit to Katie Snowden Hair.

7. Trim Regularly

While you can’t replicate the precision of a salon cut at home, it’s important to trim your hair regularly to prevent split ends and breakage. Even if you’re growing your hair out, getting a small trim every 6-8 weeks will keep it looking healthy and prevent those pesky split ends from traveling up the hair shaft.

If you’ve been using a lot of heat on your hair or have gone through a color treatment, be sure to book a visit with your hair dresser to keep your ends fresh and healthy. Regular trims are key to maintaining your style and ensuring your hair stays in great condition.

8. Be Mindful of Common Hair Care Mistakes

Here are a few mistakes I see all the time that you can easily avoid:

  • Rubbing your hair with a towel: This can cause frizz and breakage. Instead, gently blot your hair with a towel to remove excess water.
  • Using too many products: Less is more when it comes to hair products. Stick to the essentials, shampoo, conditioner, heat protectant, and a good styling product, and avoid layering too many things on your hair.
  • Sleeping with wet hair: Sleeping on wet hair can cause it to break and frizz. If you need to sleep with damp hair, try loosely braiding it to prevent tangling.
