What Is Hair, Really? Let’s Get to the Root of It!

Hello lovely people! Katie here, the proud owner and stylist at Katie Snowden Hair in the beautiful Mijas, where we like to keep things as fun as they are fabulous. Now, if you've ever been in the salon for a chat while we’re transforming your tresses, you know we have a tendency to talk about all sorts of things. But last week, something hilarious came up during a conversation, and I just had to share it with you.

One of my clients, who shall remain nameless (though if you're reading this, you know who you are!), asked me: “So, Katie, what exactly is hair? Like, is it alive? Why does it grow? And, most importantly, why does it seem to have a mind of its own sometimes?”

And just like that, the floodgates opened, and we were all laughing and pondering the deep philosophical mysteries of hair. So, today, I thought I’d have a bit of fun and tackle this very important question. Ready? Let's get to the root of it.

What is hair?

Well, in all honesty, hair is a protein filament that grows from follicles in the skin. It’s made of keratin – the same stuff your nails are made of, which is why I always say, "Your hair's as tough as your nails, darling!" But here’s where it gets interesting: hair is technically dead! Yup, once it exits your scalp, it's not alive. So when you get that dreaded split end, it’s basically just the hair saying, "I'm done, I’m out, and I’ve given up on life!"

This leads me to a question I get often: "Why does my hair seem to have a personality of its own?" Honestly, hair does have a mind of its own! You can do everything right with your styling routine, use all the fancy products, and then… poof, you wake up to find your hair has decided to become a frizzy mess, or worse, look like you just stuck your finger in a light socket. I mean, come on, hair, really?!

But let’s be real. We do have to blame ourselves sometimes. Your hair might behave like a diva because it needs the TLC, like any good star! A great trim, nourishing treatments, and maybe even a little pep talk from yours truly. And, of course, don’t forget the magic of some good hairspray, or it’ll go from "I woke up like this" to "I need a rescue mission!"

So, what’s the deal with hair growth?

Ah, yes, the age-old question: why does hair grow in the first place? Well, it's like this: your hair is just trying to do its job, which, apparently, is to protect your scalp from the sun and regulate your body temperature. But, on a deeper level, it seems hair is also trying to drive us all a little mad, one bad hair day at a time. Seriously, how do we go from sleek and shiny to a tangled mess in the blink of an eye?

But here's something I bet you didn't know: our hair grows at an average rate of about half an inch per month. If you’ve ever wished your hair grew faster (I know I have), remember this: you might just need a little patience. But hey, when it does grow, be sure to show it some love with a nourishing treatment – trust me, it’ll thank you for it.

Let’s Wrap It Up (With a Bow, of Course)

So, what’s the bottom line on hair? It’s tough, it’s sometimes a little rebellious, and it grows for reasons that are still a bit mysterious. But one thing’s for sure: it’s a part of us that we love (and sometimes love to hate). Whether it’s that bad hair day or a perfect blowout, we’re all in this together.

If your hair has been acting out, or you just want a little shine to make it sparkle, pop by Katie’s Hair Salon in Mijas. I promise we’ll have a laugh, give your hair some TLC, and send you out looking fabulous. After all, your hair’s only job is to look fabulous and be your personal statement, right? And if it’s not, I’ll be here to get it back on track.

Until next time, lovelies – stay fabulous, and remember: when in doubt, just give your hair a good shampoo and a prayer!

Much love, Katie Snowden 💁‍♀️✨

P.S. The next time someone asks you what hair is, tell them it’s your “daily life partner” – because let’s face it, you and your hair are in this together!
