What Not to Do to Your Hair at Home: Kitchen Cupboard Experiments
Let’s talk about one of the most creative but also slightly alarming things I hear from time to time. Using kitchen products as hair treatments.

Hi lovelies
Let’s talk about one of the most creative but also slightly alarming things I hear from time to time. Using kitchen products as hair treatments.
Now I get it. TikTok says mayonnaise is the secret to shiny hair, your neighbour swears by beer for volume, and your cousin insists olive oil cured her split ends. But let me tell you, your hair is not a salad.
The Mayonnaise Mask
Yes, mayonnaise contains oils and egg yolk which sound nourishing, but it also contains vinegar and preservatives that can leave your hair smelling like a picnic gone wrong. No one wants to walk around smelling like a sandwich filling.
The Beer Rinse
I cannot tell you how many times I have heard about this one. Beer supposedly adds body and shine. In reality, it makes your hair sticky, smelly, and attracts wasps if you dare to step outside. Not the kind of volume you are looking for.
The Olive Oil Treatment
Olive oil is amazing on your bread, not so much on your head. It is thick, greasy, and almost impossible to wash out properly. Clients who try this often come to me with limp, oily strands that no amount of shampoo seems to fix.
The Egg Disaster
I saved the best for last. Some people crack raw eggs onto their hair as a protein treatment. The issue is that eggs cook. If you rinse with warm water, you are basically making yourself an omelette. Trust me, scraping scrambled egg out of your hair is not the self care moment you were hoping for.
Why Professional Products Win
Salon products are carefully formulated to give your hair the nourishment it needs without the side effects of smelling like a fridge. They are designed to penetrate the hair properly, wash out cleanly, and leave you with results you can see and feel.
My Advice
Step away from the condiments and let me recommend treatments that actually work. Whether it is moisture, strength, or shine you are after, there is a professional product that will do the job beautifully without making you hungry.
Your kitchen is for cooking, not conditioning. If you want your hair to feel as fabulous as it looks, pop in and see me at www.katie.es. I promise you, the results will be worth it.
