What Not to Do to Your Hair at Home: The Laundry Iron Trick

Hi lovelies

Yes, you read that right. Believe it or not, some people have actually tried to straighten or curl their hair using the iron from their laundry cupboard. I know it sounds crazy, but I have seen the results in the salon and let me tell you, it is not pretty.

The Thinking Behind It

The idea goes like this. A flat iron is called a flat iron. A clothes iron is also an iron. Therefore, they must do the same job, right? Wrong. Very, very wrong.

What Actually Happens

A laundry iron is designed to smooth out cotton sheets, not your delicate strands of hair. The heat is far too high and completely uncontrolled. One press and you have fried your hair before you even realise what has happened.

And let’s not even start on the steam button. Scalding hot water shooting onto your scalp is not exactly the glamorous salon experience you were hoping for.

The Curling Attempt

I once heard about someone wrapping their hair around the handle of a metal spoon and then pressing it with a clothes iron to create curls. What they ended up with was burnt hair and a kitchen utensil that looked like it had been through a campfire. Please do not try this at home.

Why Professional Tools Matter

Straighteners and curling tongs are designed to heat hair safely. They have ceramic plates, temperature controls, and coatings that protect your strands. A laundry iron has none of these things. It is basically like comparing a chef’s knife to a chainsaw. Both cut, but one is clearly the better choice for dinner prep.
