Hi lovelies
Let’s talk about something super simple but seriously underrated, brushing your hair. Sounds basic, right? But honestly, the way you brush your hair can make a huge difference in the health, shine, and overall look of your locks.
As a hairdresser here in Mijas, I see so many clients who are investing in colour, cuts, and even hair extensions in the Costa Del Sol, but they’re not always using the right brushing techniques at home. And that can undo a lot of the good stuff we do in the salon.
So here’s my little guide to getting the most out of your brushing routine. Trust me, your hair will thank you.
Why Brushing Is So Important
Brushing does more than detangle. It helps to distribute your scalp’s natural oils from root to tip, which keeps your hair hydrated and glossy. It also stimulates the scalp, encourages blood flow, and can even promote healthy hair growth.
But brushing the wrong way can cause breakage, frizz, and even hair loss. Yikes.
Choose the Right Brush
Not all brushes are created equal, and the one you use should depend on your hair type.
For fine or straight hair Use a soft bristle brush or a cushion paddle brush to glide through gently without pulling.
For thick or curly hair Go for a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush that can handle volume without snapping strands.
For hair extensions If you’ve had hair extensions in Mijas or anywhere along the Costa Del Sol, it’s so important to use an extension-friendly brush. These are designed to move around the bonds or tapes without tugging or loosening them.
Brushing Tips I Swear By
- Always start at the ends and work your way up. This avoids dragging tangles through the length of your hair
- Hold the section you’re brushing with your other hand to reduce tension at the root
- Avoid brushing wet hair unless you’re using a brush made for it. Wet hair is more fragile and prone to breakage
- Brush gently, never force it. If you hit a knot, stop and work through it slowly
- Clean your brush regularly. A dirty brush can transfer oil, dust, and old product back into clean hair
How Often Should You Brush?
There’s no one-size-fits-all rule, but generally:
- Once or twice a day is perfect for most people
- Curly hair types can get away with brushing less, especially if you prefer to keep your curls defined
- If you wear extensions, a gentle morning and evening brush is ideal to avoid tangling and matting
A Little Extra Love for Extension Wearers
If you’re rocking hair extensions in the Costa Del Sol, brushing is even more important. Keep a small extension brush in your bag for gentle touch-ups throughout the day, especially if you’ve been at the beach or out in the wind.
And please, never go to bed without brushing first. A quick detangle at night prevents knots from forming while you sleep.
Brushing might seem like the most basic part of your hair care routine, but doing it right makes all the difference. Whether you’ve got natural hair, extensions, or a bit of both, a good brush and a gentle hand are your best friends.
If you’re ever unsure what kind of brush is right for your hair, just pop into the salon or send me a message at www.katie.es. I’m always happy to help you choose what works best for your gorgeous hair.
Until next time, keep brushing with love
