Gloss And Toner: Refreshing Your Colour Without Full Colour
Faded, brassy or flat? A gloss is the quiet hero of colour maintenance and it is much quicker than you think.

If I could get every colour client to do one thing, it would be to book a gloss between their main appointments. It is the least glamorous service on the menu and one of the most effective.
What a gloss actually does
Lightened hair is porous. Sun, sea, hard water and hot tools slowly strip the tone that was put in, and the warm undertones underneath start to show. That is the brassiness you notice by week six.
A gloss or toner puts tone and shine back into the hair. It can cool a blonde that has gone yellow, warm up a brunette that looks dull, or soften the line where your roots are growing through. It also smooths the surface so the hair reflects light again.
Gloss or full colour?
If your roots are only a little through and the problem is mainly tone and shine, a gloss is often all you need. If you have significant regrowth, greys you want covered or you want a real change, we are into colour or a fresh balayage territory.
How often
For most of my blonde and balayage clients, every six to eight weeks works well. It stretches out the time between bigger appointments, so it can actually save you time and money over the year.
Keeping it fresh at home
- Wash in cool water, heat opens the cuticle and lets tone escape
- Use a colour safe shampoo and a purple one only when needed, not daily
- Always protect from the sun, a hat at the beach does more than you would expect
