What balayage actually is

Balayage is a freehand technique rather than a shade. Lightener is painted directly onto the hair, following its natural movement, so the lightest pieces sit where the sun would naturally catch them and the depth is kept closer to the root. Nothing is packed into foils from the scalp down, which is why the grow-out is soft instead of a hard line.

Because placement is decided strand by strand, two clients asking for the same photograph will leave with different colour maps. The technique bends to your base colour, your parting, the way your hair falls and how much contrast you actually want to live with.

Katie's approach

Katie trained in the UK and has spent more than ten years behind the chair, most of it on blonde and hand-painted colour. Every balayage starts with the hair in front of her rather than a formula on paper: how much pigment is already in it, how it has been coloured before, how porous the ends are, and how it behaves once it dries.

Colour is then mapped in sections, painted, and finished with a toner or gloss chosen after the lightener has been rinsed, when the true underlying tone is visible. The finishing gloss is what stops warmth from reading brassy in strong Costa del Sol daylight.

Lived-in blonde and natural-looking colour

Lived-in blonde means colour designed around the appointment you will realistically book next, not the day it is done. Root depth is kept, brightness is concentrated through the mid-lengths and ends, and the transition is blurred so that eight or ten weeks later the hair still looks intentional.

It suits people who want to look like they have good hair rather than fresh colour, and it is the reason many clients stretch the gap between full appointments and simply refresh the tone in between.

Is balayage right for you?

It works on most starting points, including dark hair, but the honest answer for a very dark base is that the lightest result is reached over more than one appointment. Lifting brunette hair to a bright blonde in a single session is where condition is usually lost, so Katie will plan it in stages and tell you at the consultation how many visits it is likely to take.

Previously box-dyed, henna-treated or heavily home-lightened hair needs to be seen before anything is booked. Fine hair, curly hair and hair that has been growing out an old colour all take the technique well, they just take different placement.

The consultation

Every new colour appointment begins with a consultation: what you have, what you want, what your hair will safely allow, and what the upkeep looks like. Bring photographs if you have them, and be honest about anything that has been on your hair before.

Where lift is significant, a strand test is taken so the plan is based on how your hair reacts rather than an assumption. If a look is not achievable in one visit, you will hear that before you sit down, not afterwards.

What happens during your appointment

Sectioning and painting first, then development, watched rather than timed to a fixed clock. Bond-building products are worked in through the process where the hair needs the support. Once rinsed, the tone is placed, then a cut or a tidy of the ends if it is booked, and a finishing blow dry so you can see how the colour reads when it moves.

Balayage is not a quick appointment. Allow the full time shown above, and more if you are having length work or a treatment at the same visit.

Maintaining your balayage

Tone fades faster here than in northern Europe. Sun, salt water and chlorinated pools all pull warmth through lightened hair, so a gloss or toner between full appointments does most of the maintenance work. A colour-safe shampoo, heat protection and an occasional bond-building treatment cover the rest.

Most clients come back for a tone refresh well before they need more lightener, and for a full balayage far less often than they would for foils.

Where clients travel from

The salon is in Riviera del Sol, a short drive from Calahonda, La Cala de Mijas and the rest of Mijas Costa, with regular clients coming from Fuengirola and Marbella. Many are British and Scandinavian residents who want colour done the way it was done at home.
